This year, Valentine’s Day could be an ideal time to encourage children of all ages to read. A love of reading is the most important gift you can give your child or student – it’ll never wear out, never become outdated, provide hours of fun and last a life-time!

The Amelia Bedelia books. Children love the irrepressible Amelia, who takes everything literally.

Books by Beverly Cleary. Whether it’s the Ralph books (that’s Ralph S. Mouse), or Socks the Cat, elementary-age kids enjoy Cleary’s books. They’re fun to read, appeal to kids’ imaginations, allow kids to see themselves and their friends in the plots, and make for great free-reading experiences. The Ramona Quimby – age eight – books are particularly popular.

A Wrinkle in Time. Madeleine L’Engle’s book isn’t exactly science fiction, but it’s not exactly realistic either. It’s a bit of an adventure, a comedy, a growing-up story, and a great study of child and adolescent characters. It appeals to late elementary, middle school and even high school ages.

The books of Judy Blume. She’s a classic, and kids still love reading her stories. Parents like to read with their kids, especially the books that deal with self-esteem and other growing-up issues. A particularly popular one with kids is Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing.

The books of Jerdine Nolen. A favorite children’s author, Ms. Nolen writes about imaginative kids in imaginative settings. Her trilogy of tall tales – Thunder Rose, Big Jabe, and Hewitt Anderson’s Great Big Life – is special, not only for the compelling stories, but for the artwork of Kadir Nelson. Her newest book, her first novel for kids ages 8-12, is Eliza’s Freedom Road.

To Kill a Mockingbird. This wonderful book is always on the top of any book list for older kids. It’s about heroism, tolerance, good parenting, friendship, family, and the values to which good people aspire. There’s also a great story that involves a courtroom drama, mischievous kids, scary scenes, and a Halloween ham costume.

The Catcher in the Rye. Holden Caulfield’s experiences, thoughts, anxieties, sarcasm, and wry humor are equally relevant today as they were when this book was first published. Some of the scenes are laugh-out-loud funny.

Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain captures the spirit of boyhood, friendship, good versus evil, and, yes, America.

The Harry Potter books. Kudos to Harry for making reading okay again for youngsters.

Shakespeare. Because every reading list should include at least one item that stretches you, we suggest Shakespeare. Great stories of love, murder, slapstick comedy, history, revenge, witchcraft, ambition, jealousy, mistaken identity, and outsized personalities. The language alone will awe you. Don’t forget the sonnets.

Poems of Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, and Robert Frost. The spare language of poetry cuts to the heart of our thoughts and emotions, our fears and dreams, our public lives and our private ones. Poetry can be difficult, but you’ll know your favorite poet when you read him or her.

Myths and legends. From Beowulf to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, set in Greece, Italy, Africa, or Scandinavia, these stories form the foundations of societies and cultures. They’re always exciting and insightful, letting us recognize the roots of behavior, attitudes and identity.

Children’s fairy tales. These stories have fascinated, frightened, and entertained us for generations. They are as close to an oral tradition we have, and children love to have them read aloud.

Night and The Diary of Anne Frank. Because we should never forget.

Religious readings. Whether it’s the Old Testament or New, the Koran, Buddhist, Shinto, or Hindu readings, these are part of our universal culture. For example, the Bible’s Old Testament is full of amazing stories (the creation, the flood) and poems (psalms) that form the basis of beliefs and cultural references.

Biographies and autobiographies. You can’t go wrong reading about cultural, social, athletic, or popular heroes and heroines. What accomplishments did they achieve? What challenges did they face? What can you learn from their experiences? John Hope Franklin’s autobiography, Mirror to America, is riveting and a testament to perseverance, integrity and hard work.

Great American plays. Read, see, or perform in some timeless American plays like Death of a Salesman, Our Town, The Matchmaker, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Glass Menagerie. Think about and discuss how play-reading is different from book-reading.

Books that teach us about people in other lands. There are so many, but the one that immediately comes to mind for older teens is The Kite Runner. It portrays Afghanistan as you don’t see it on the nightly news.

Your favorite books. Talk to your kids about the books you found appealing when you were their age. Share these with them, tell why you liked them, and talk about the pleasant memories. Let them see that reading is for everyone.

There are so many others. Jane Austen, the romantic poets, Zora Neale Hurston, Beatrix Potter, Bram Stoker, and Aesop’s Fables. Happy Valentine’s Day, readers!

Everyone speaks the language of numbers, whether in commerce, expressing age or calculating distance. Mathematics is the only language shared by all humans – regardless of native tongue, geography, economic background or culture.

In today’s global economy, everyone, not just those who are mathematically inclined, must know how to speak math – understand mathematical concepts. The key to lifelong, academic and economic success is the development of critical thinking skills and numerical fluency in math curriculums from pre-kindergarten through high school.

Students should begin to develop a good grasp of numbers while they are young. Although memorizing multiplication tables and solving calculations are important, developing a solid sense of numbers is essential.

According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, by focusing on mathematics – especially algebra – across all grades, we will ensure that students develop the analytical thinking and reasoning skills needed for success in school and beyond. In essence, algebra for middle and high school students must be preceded by algebraic reasoning in the early years.

“Students who successfully complete higher level mathematics courses – beginning with algebra – are at an advantage,” says Judy Ann Brown, mathematics program manager for Sylvan Learning. Traditionally, students cannot take advanced mathematics classes in secondary school until they have mastered the foundational math concepts learned in elementary school – decimals and fractions – and successfully completed Algebra 1. “Success in Algebra 1 is pivotal because it is the language spoken in mathematics.”

An understanding of the importance of math in their lives puts students well on their way to academic success. Sylvan Learning encourages parents to play an active role in boosting their children’s numbers sense and discovering a love of higher mathematics.

Make math connections to everyday life.
There are many opportunities for students to see the value of math. Think of tasks that you do everyday – rearranging a teenager’s room is a lesson in geometry and equally cutting slices of pie can teach fractions. The more parents talk about math while completing these tasks, the more students will realize its importance.

Involve your children in real-life family decisions.
Encourage them to plan a family activity while remaining in budget. For example, ask them to plan a night at the movies or create a budget for the family vacation.

Demonstrate your math ability.
Think out loud so your child can hear your analytical reasoning. For younger children, count your change or discuss which measuring cup is needed when baking a birthday cake. For older students, calculate discounts when shopping or estimate how much money will be needed to fill up the gas tank.

“Mathematize” cool careers.
Casually talk about mathematics while highlighting the types of math needed in your children’s chosen, “cool” careers. Video game designers, architects, doctors, football coaches, musicians and chefs utilize math skills every day.

Praise your children’s academic progress.
Tell them you are proud of their math efforts even when they struggle. When students are confident in their abilities, they enjoy learning. That love of learning leads to a willingness to try new, academic experiences.

It’s that time of the year when stores and web sites are packed with a variety oftoys and games making it hard to know which types are appropriate matches for your children.

Choosing the right toy for your child will give him the opportunity to think, practice a particular skill or learn something new, as well as engage your child in hours of play. Here’s a list of categories of games and toys that will make the choices easier this year. Some are new, and many are timeless classics that have been delighting children for years.

Toys and games that build creativity

Look for toys and games that encourage children to think creatively, to solve fun problems in multiple ways. This will help with school subjects like math, which, after all, is problem solving. Building toys and games are excellent as are science kits and engineering sets.

Toys and games that encourage learning new things

Look for toys and games that can build vocabulary or math skills in fun ways that don’t look like vocabulary or math. Or that build knowledge in other areas, like science, the environment, horseback riding, sports, history, geography, whatever your child shows an interest in. Interests change quickly, so don’t go spending a fortune at the first sign of interest. Buy a simple deck of cards to teach math, for instance. Develop the interest, then spend the money, not the other way around.

Toys and games that encourage movement

Kids need plenty of exercise. Consider investing in simple athletic equipment that allows kids to experiment with various sports to see which ones they like and may have some talent with. Show them how to use it. Share your knowledge and talents – or even more fun, your lack of it – and get out in the yard and kick the soccer ball, throw the football, jump the rope. Use chalk for hopscotch. Blow bubbles and chase them around the yard.

Toys and games that stimulate interest in other cultures and parts of the world

As the world shrinks, it’s increasingly important for our kids to know as much as possible about the world’s places, cultures, and people. Consider toys and games that provoke such interests. Check out the gift shops at local museums for cool toys and games. Learning a new language or even sparking exciting and fulfilling travel in the future could be a result. More and more colleges are requiring semesters abroad – get a head start.

The most important characteristic of the best toys and games is the ability for kids and parents to play together from time to time. Inexpensive board games do this every bit as well as expensive computer games.

Traveler? Quiz Helps Parents Tailor Homework Strategies for Success

With the school year’s first quarter completed in most communities, report cards have recently been mailed home to parents. Parents disappointed with their child’s grades still have time to take action to help their children achieve academic success.

Parents should, of course, reach out directly to teachers to get their perspectives and suggestions. They should also make sure the family’s homework “house” is in order, since homework headaches can negatively impact student grades. Most parents are aware of the basics of good homework habits, but many parents don’t know about perhaps the single-most important factor determining a student’s homework success – his or her “homework personality.”

Just as students have their own individual learning styles, they also have their own unique homework personalities. “Sprinters” are bundles of energy who rush through assignments. “Travelers” are inquisitive students who want to experience different situations. Determining a student’s “homework personality” is key to tailoring homework and study strategies that foster success in school.

“Because each student is unique, with different learning styles and academic needs, one child may need to escape from potential distractions in order to study while another student multi-tasks and maintains good grades. If grades slip, change the way homework is completed in your household and re-address your child’s homework technique,” states Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and senior vice president of education outreach for Sylvan Learning. “The key is really getting to know your child’s unique homework style and helping him create a personalized learning plan that develops the skills, habits and attitudes needed for lifelong success.”

To help parents decipher their child’s “homework personality,” Sylvan’s education experts have created a “homework personality” quiz. Parents should take the quiz for each of their school-age children to determine the optimal homework formula for each child.

Parents can also take the “homework personality” quiz online and obtain additional educational resources for children in grades pre-K through 12 by visiting www.SylvanLearning.com or by calling (434) 832-1000.

For many children, the first day of school doesn’t only mean new teachers and new friends – it can also be a source of anxiety with homework assignments and tests just around the corner. Starting the school year off on the right foot can help minimize a child’s stress level throughout the year.

The experts here at Sylvan Learning, suggest parents help their children prepare for the transition to the next grade level and the return to school by encouraging a structured routine from day-one and staying actively involved in their child’s education.

To help children get ready for the new school year and to minimize academic stress, Sylvan Learning offers these tips and ideas to make the transition from summer to school easier. Tips include back–to-school suggestions and specific hints for the transitional years:

Back-to-School Tips

Get back in the routine. Ease transition from lazy summer days to the structure of the school year by re-establishing bedtime, mealtime, reading and homework routines. Talk with your child about the importance of these routines and how they help ensure that he is not overtired or overly anxious about schoolwork or the next day of school.

Set education goals. Help your child set goals at the very beginning of the year. Whether it is striving for an A in reading, handing in all homework on time or preparing for tests well in advance, setting goals can help set the routine for the new year.

Develop a relationship with your child’s teacher. Take the time to meet your child’s teachers at the beginning of the school year. Teachers can be the best source for information about your child’s scholastic performance and they can recommend ways to help your child or resolve any difficulties he or she is having.

Homework routine and place. Designate a specific time and place for homework time and help your child discover a regular, quiet place where he can study. Make sure that the area is free from potential distractions and that study tools are at your child’s fingertips to keep him focused on homework and studying.

Stay on schedule. Your child should keep a schedule of all classes, assignments and key dates, such as project deadlines and test dates. As part of that schedule, she should include specific times for studying, projects and extracurricular activities. The more thorough the schedule, the more efficient your child will be. Organization minimizes late nights completing homework assignments, cramming for tests at the last minute and can ultimately reduce student anxiety about school.

Emphasize organization. For some students, having color-coded binders for each subject helps them stay on track throughout the school year. Keeping notes organized helps test preparation later in the year, so work with your child to determine the best method for him.

Encourage learning at home. Promoting learning outside of the classroom helps children perform better in school. To nurture reading skills spend at least one hour per week – 10 to 15 minutes a day – reading with your child. To enhance math proficiency, try allowing your child to help plan the next family trip and encourage him to compute miles, cost of gas, expenses for food, hotel and entertainment.

Transition Year Back-to-School Tips (Children Starting Kindergarten, First Grade, Middle School or High School)

Visit the school. If your child is changing schools with the new year, make a special trip together to visit the school before the first day of classes. Checking out the new classroom and the new teacher before school starts will help ease feelings of anxiety and help get your child into his or academic routine. If it’s available, review the class schedule with your child and prepare him for the new grade.

Discuss changes in routine. Talk with your child about how the routine for her new school may differ from the previous year. It can be difficult for children to adjust to changes in schedules and workloads. Explain how her schedule may differ from last year. Will there be more homework assignments? Does she have to wake up earlier? Will she have more than one teacher this year?

Provide extra support. When starting the new school year, especially if it’s a transition year, a little extra support can’t hurt. Talk with your child about her fears regarding school and maintain an open dialogue throughout the year. Discuss what subjects she’s anticipating and any areas she finds particularly challenging. Don’t forget to talk about homework and tests.

Transition into Kindergarten. Kindergarten is your child’s introduction to elementary school and a first opportunity to learn basic math and reading skills, not to mention a first look at routines and expectations of group learning. As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher. The skills that he learns from you – how to get along with others, follow directions and listen to directions – will help him start the year off right.

Transition into middle school and high school. Transitioning from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school brings many questions and concerns. Organization becomes even more important in middle school and high school when your child must keep track of multiple subjects, homework, teachers, classrooms and books. You can help him to reduce stress by giving him a calendar/planner to help him organize these new items and encouraging him to build good study habits.

Don’t Let Your Child Forget Everything He/She Learned in School This Summer. Stay on Track With Our Tips!

Within 24 to 48 hours after learning new concepts, students often begin to forget information unless it is reinforced or applied immediately. That’s why, during school breaks, even the best students forget lessons they have learned during the school year.

While a break from school is great for recharging your children’s batteries, if students aren’t using the skills they acquired in the classroom, they could find themselves lagging behind once the school bell rings again. Following are great ways to help your child continue to learn, in a fun way, when away from the classroom.

Writing – To help writing skills, encourage your child to start a diary or write letters to a grandparent or friend. If you are traveling on a vacation, ask your child to keep a travel journal recording where you stayed and what you did. At the end of every day, talk through the activities with your child and help him or her with a journal. It not only improves writing skills, but also creates great family memories.

Mathematics – Helping mom or dad with grocery shopping develops opportunities to use math skills, such as making change, weighing fruits and vegetables, etc. Providing assistance with cooking can also familiarize children with weights and measures, organization and planning and following a recipe. Perhaps you and your children could make a special dessert for the whole family. Help children pick a recipe, make the list and go shopping together.

Reading – You can’t start too early. You can’t read too much. Reading to young children nurtures an interest in language, words and communication. For older kids, reading together can be fun and interesting. Children also learn by example. If parents are setting time aside to read, it reinforces the fun and enjoyment of reading. Local libraries offer infinite resources for children. Librarians can recommend books appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests, and many libraries offer free children’s programs and clubs.

Research – There are an abundance of sites that provide summer reading lists for children. At www.bookadventure.com, children (K-8) create personalized books lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take quizzes on the books they’ve read at school or at home, and earn prizes for their reading comprehension. The program is designed to motivate students to read more often, for longer periods of time and with greater understanding.

Analysis and Logic – Many family games and puzzles are not only fun, but help children to develop and reinforce skills. A simple card game can involve mathematics, analysis and logical thinking. Be sure to select games appropriate for your child’s age level.

Summer Enrichment Programs – There are many enrichment activities available for children when school is out-of-session. Sylvan Learning offers engaging programs that keep the interest and fun in learning alive through the summer and into the school year.

To help keep writing skills sharp, Sylvan Learning Center of Lynchburg, VA is pleased to offer the following tips you can share with your child before his/her next writing assignment:

Good writing takes time. Spend time organizing your ideas and thinking about what you really want to say in your essay.

Use the Internet or library to research your topic.

Prepare an outline before you begin to write.

Use transition words – such as “after,” “although,” “before,” “however” and “therefore” to help your ideas flow together.

Be willing to revise. Change your sentences and paragraphs around, add material that lends to your writing and delete material that doesn’t work.

Avoid clichés and jargon.

Always keep a dictionary handy to help with spelling. Don’t rely on your computer’s spell check tool.

Use a thesaurus to help you think of a new way to say something.

Ask someone else to edit your work.

Proofread everything. Make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation are perfect before you declare anything “finished.”
